According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), nearly 35% of California women and 31% of California men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes. By any measure, those are sobering and almost unbelievable numbers. Our residential Shelter program serves as a safe-haven for individuals escaping the devastating effects of domestic violence. We offer a warm and peaceful environment, giving our clients the opportunity to heal, create stability and be empowered through a wide variety of counseling, case management and educational opportunities.

The event, hosted annually as the main source of revenue for the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) to finance their work, will feature “Saturday Night Live” Colin Jost as a host and President Joe Biden is expected to deliver remarks. Kelly called the tax cut plan "too expensive" because it is projected to reduce revenues by $469 million a year by 2029. The governor's latest proposal would instead have a price tag of $433 million a year.

However, staff who took care of children while parents took part in the outpatient services are not currently working since the outpatient clinics are closed. The new location makes Laura’s House more visible, and precautions continue to be taken against stalkers. Small red signs printed with the word “Alert” are tacked up on doorways to let staff know a credible threat has been made by an abuser, whose description and other identifying information is also provided. There’s room too for a distribution site to sort and transport donations of clothing, housewares and other items that Laura’s House sells at its two thrift stores – in Lake Forest and San Juan Capistrano – to help support its programs. More than 200 supporters were invited, including donors who have contributed to the $10 million capital campaign that made it possible for the new location of Laura’s House.

The 19,000-square-foot building was close to public transportation, had tenants to help defray costs and was ready for immediate occupancy. The facility provides much-needed space for future expansion of on-residential programming. The inception of Laura's House was inspired by a true story about a woman called Laura who was a victim of domestic violence. The 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, held on April 27 at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., welcomed journalists and many celebrities on its red carpet.

While the mood at the new location is celebratory, the mission remains sobering. Laura’s House relocated in June to a building that, once fully developed, will offer four times as much space as the suite of offices occupied in Ladera Ranch the previous 11 years. Not only that, but Laura’s House owns the two-story structure and will save money with a mortgage that is about $7,000 less a month than the lease they once had.

That initial funding combined with $1 million of Laura’s House’s own financial resources and a $4.2 million loan from Farmers & Merchants Bank enabled Laura’s House to buy the building at 33 Journey. That was when Laura’s House launched The Power of the Journey capital campaign with the goal of establishing the new Laura’s House Domestic Violence Resource Center (DVRC) in Aliso Viejo. Board members Cheryl Osborn, president and CEO, Casco Contractors Inc. in Irvine, and Wayne Pinnell, managing partner of Irvine accounting firm Haskell & White LLP, took the reigns as co-chairs. In those two and a half decades, nearly 60,000 people’s lives have been changed because of Laura’s House’s comprehensive programs. Domestic violence is prevalent in every community, and affects all people regardless of age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality.

"I've been here a long time; we've never had such a solid budget," Sawyer said, adding that he feels comfortable with the size of the tax plan. Rep. There were other issues as well—it was difficult to reach because of its remote location and lack of public transportation options, and there was simply not enough space for classes, training and meetings. The organization couldn’t continue to grow and improve until that major issue was resolved. Volunteers interested in taking the 40 Hour Domestic Violence Advocacy Training must be at least 16 years old and if less than 18 years old must supply parent permission to attend the training.

It was a gift from a dear friend, Eddie Vedder, who happens to be as rabid a collector as Dern. With its “inherently beautiful set of bones,” as Kovac puts it, the updates were easy—and respectful. Director David Lynch, a midcentury architecture buff whom Dern first worked with on Blue Velvet in the 1980s, was also someone she called on for advice early in the project. A few seasons’ worth of renovations opened up the three-bedroom, 2,464 square-foot home immensely. They replaced walls with glass, added a skylight and pool, brightened the interior palette, expanded the kitchen and removed awkward, tiny spaces and a dark backyard hedge that blocked light from radiating down the hill. As a result the home has a beautiful flow, with the inside and out bleeding together.

Florida mansion tied to bin Laden family is demolished

Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.

Pakistani security officials arriving at the scene after the US raid found a spartan house. Each bedroom not only had an attached bathroom, which is common here, but also its own kitchen, an unusual feature that would have allowed its occupants to live independently in each bedroom. In a photograph, seen by the Guardian, of one of the bathrooms on the first floor there is a chair with the middle removed, which seemed to have been designed to allow a sick or elderly person to sit on the toilet more easily. Security officials speculated this may have ben the bedroom of Bin Laden, who has suffered for many years with kidney trouble. The woman lay quietly, her head in the girl's lap, though she seemed conscious, the officials told the Guardian.

For many families of 9/11 victims, bin Laden’s death symbolized justice and retribution. The compound’s unusual and extensive security features, along with further intelligence information, prompted suspicion that the residence was Osama bin Laden’s hideout. Before the conflict was fully resolved and a new routine established, SEAL team six arrived by helicopter the night of May 2, 2011, and Osama, the al-Kuwaiti brothers and some of their family members were dead. On the back of a door, he hung the thobe (an Arab man’s robe) he donned when filming videos to be distributed to followers. A snub-nosed Kalashnikov, a memento from his days fighting Russian invaders in Afghanistan, rested on a shelf above the door.

The September 11, 2001, attacks and the U.S. pursuit of bin Laden

His body, identified visually at the site of the raid, was taken out of Pakistan by U.S. forces for examination and DNA identification and soon after was given a sea burial. Hours after its confirmation, bin Laden’s death was announced by Obama in a televised address. Several days after Obama’s announcement, al-Qaeda released a statement publicly acknowledging bin Laden’s death and vowing revenge.

On 2 May 2011, Bin Laden was killed by US special operations forces at his compound in Abbottabad. His corpse was buried at the Arabian Sea and he was officially succeeded by his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri on 16 June 2011. Al-Arabiya, a Middle East news channel, reported that Bin Laden's 12-year-old daughter had told Pakistani investigators the US forces captured her father alive and shot him dead in front of family members. An official of the ISI, the Pakistani intelligence agency, told the Guardian the girl had seen her father killed but did not suggest Bin Laden had been captured at that point. On Wednesday officials gave the New York Times the most detailed version yet. They said that when the commandos moved into the main house they saw the courier's brother, who they believed was preparing to fire a weapon.

In October 1999, the United Nations designated al-Qaeda as a terrorist organization. Bin Laden’s family lived isolated even from the al-Kuwaiti brothers and their families, with a locked metal door at the base of the stairwell to the terrorist's rooms. Only the two couriers left the compound on any kind of regular basis—to run errands, go to the mosque and occasionally attend funerals, weddings or other local ceremonies.

By late 2010, analysts were able to link the courier to a large, highly-secured compound in Abbottabad, a town about 35 miles north of Islamabad. Additionally, the compound was designed to obscure lines of sight from multiple directions. As the raid commenced, the tail of one of the helicopters grazed the compound wall, forcing it into a “soft crash” landing that fortunately did not result in major injuries, although the helicopter itself had to be destroyed so none of its tech would fall into the wrong hands. Over the next few months, the CIA used informants, surveillance and other intelligence gathering measures to arrive at the conclusion that bin Laden and his family were hiding out in the compound – but up until the attack, there was no hard proof that bin Laden was present, only the best guess available. The raid had begun on a moonless night, as highly modified "stealth" helicopters designed to avoid detection flew in secret through Pakistan airspace across the farmlands of the Orash valley towards their target. Osama bin Laden's daughter cradled the head of her wounded mother in the room where the al-Qaida leader had just been killed. Bin Laden was one of more than 50 children of Muhammad bin Laden, a self-made billionaire who, after immigrating to Saudi Arabia from Yemen as a labourer, rose to direct major construction projects for the Saudi royal family.

A senior Pentagon official told reporters on Monday in a background briefing that the American team engaged in a firefight and Bin Laden resisted. The official gave the strong impression Bin Laden had been armed and may have been shooting. US officials have given the clearest version yet of the killing of Osama bin Laden in an account that directly contradicts previous assertions by the director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, and White House chief security adviser, John Brennan, that he died in a firefight.

It is believed that the compound was owned by a shipping magnate based out of Waziristan. The raid also unearthed a family video from bin Laden’s son Hamza bin Laden’s wedding in Iran. “The only picture we had of Hamza prior to the video’s release was of him as a child. Hamza was being groomed for a leadership position, so seeing him as an adult was very valuable,” says Roggio. The residents burned their garbage rather than putting it out for collection. Bin Laden’s son Khalid did much of the maintenance, and the compound had chickens, goats, rabbits, honeybees, cow and kitchen gardens.

By the time of Muhammad’s death in an airplane accident in 1967, his company had become one of the largest construction firms in the Middle East, and the bin Laden family had developed a close relationship with the Saudi royal family. Each floor had several rooms, and in total, the house had nine bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and two kitchens (via History). The third floor is where bin Laden lived and spent the majority of his time, restricting himself to just two rooms, per The Guardian. The wedding guest list also proved revealing, as it included multiple members of al Qaeda’s inner circle. Hamza married the daughter of Abu Muhammad Al-Masri, another al Qaeda leader, and guests included Mohammed Showqi al-Islambouli, whose brother Khalid assassinated former Egyptian President Anwar-el Sadat.

“Minutes seemed like hours,” he recalled, even after the SEAL team members were back on board their helicopters with bin Laden’s body and a trove of data retrieved from the compound. He had said at a White House briefing on Tuesday that Bin Laden had not been armed. "On the first floor of Bin Laden's building two al-Qaida couriers were killed, along with a woman who was killed in crossfire," he said.

For over two decades, bin Laden has been al Qaeda’s leader and symbol, and has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies. The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al Qaeda. Yellow flowered curtains screened the room from curious eyes, and the walls were filled with hundreds of tapes (audio and video) carefully organized in rows. “Arshad” hired a local architectural firm to draw up plans for a large, two-story building on the premises—with very specific criteria. On the ground floor, the new villa was designed with four bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as a kitchen; the second floor had another four bedrooms and four bathrooms. A third floor was added later, write Levy and Scott-Clark; it would become bin Laden’s living area, with a bedroom, study and tiny bathroom and kitchen.

He was known to be a skilled orator, able to manipulate a variety of rhetorical strategies and to make his message easily accessible even to the uneducated. At the end of the 20th century, bin Laden was thought to have had thousands of militant followers worldwide, in places as diverse as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Libya, Bosnia, Chechnya, and the Philippines. Osama bin Laden studied business administration at King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah, where it is likely that he also received instruction in religious studies from Muḥammad Quṭb, brother of the Islamic revivalist Sayyid Quṭb, and Abdullah Azzam, a militant leader.

However, Khalil’s family swiftly departed the vacation abode in the immediate wake of the 9/11 attacks, leaving the mansion to face its fate. The SEALs operated in teams and used weapons including the HK416[74] assault rifle (their primary weapon), the Mark 48 machine gun for fire support, and the MP7[55] personal defense weapon, which is used by some SEALs for close quarters and greater silence. They picked up the bloodied bodies of Bin Laden and his son and flew into the night, back to Afghanistan. They were out of sight by the time the first Pakistani officials arrived shortly afterwards to find four dead bodies – including an unnamed man thought perhaps to have been a guard or household retainer – and the bound survivors in reportedly hysterical mood. Kuwaiti lived with his family in the complex's guesthouse, divided from the main house by a high wall.

The al-Kuwaiti brothers disguised how many people lived in the compound by ensuring that no fewer than four separate electric meters were installed. The compound came to be known to locals as the Waziristan Haveli, or Waziristan House/Mansion, due to the Waziri accents of “Arshad” and his brother, Ibrahim. Both men—al Qaeda stalwarts who would serve as bin Laden’s primary couriers, caretakers, aides and buffers to the outside world, moved in first, together with their families. By the end of 2005, bin Laden and at least three of his wives and several younger children, had arrived and been installed. Older bin Laden children and their spouses and children would come and go over the next half-dozen years. “Arshad” instructed a local builder to construct a 7-foot-high wall around one of the buildings, and then a thick, 18-foot high wall around the entire compound, topped by razor wire.

Then, on October 12, 2000, a small boat loaded with explosives plowed into the hull of the U.S.S. Cole, an American naval destroyer docked off the coast of Yemen. But tonight, we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to. That is the story of our history, whether it’s the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place.

Having cast her vote in favor of the raid, Clinton clearly remained anxious about the consequences of any mishaps for Obama’s presidency. On May 1, 2011, American soldiers killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden at his compound near Islamabad, Pakistan. Intelligence officials believe bin Laden was responsible for many deadly acts of terrorism, including the 1998 bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and the September 11, 2001 attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. “The sole focus of the operation was to kill or capture Osama bin Laden,” a Defense Department official told reporters after the raid, during a background briefing. They took survivors to a safe part of the compound so they weren't hurt when the wrecked helicopter was blown up.

International reactions to bin Laden’s death ranged from favorable to mixed. Some Arab countries and leaders condemned the actions of the United States. The actual mission, dubbed Operation Neptune Spear, officially started in the early-morning hours of May 2, Pakistan time (afternoon of May 1, Eastern Daylight Time). The model depicts the compound known to locals in Abbottabad as ” the Waziristan Haveli.” “Haveli” means “mansion” in Pashtun and Waziristan is a region in Pakistan.

Eventually he rebelled against indoor confinement, sending his son Khalid to buy him a hat with a wide brim, like a cowboy hat, that would mask his features if he went outside late in the day. Khalid also oversaw the construction of a gazebo and trellises that would prevent a satellite from obtaining a clear image of his face or physique. Khalil and his family lived there for more than 20 years but were forced to flee following the September 11 attacks. According to Fox 35 Orlando, the home - which sits on 17 acres of land - has changed owners several times over the years and it used to belong to the family that created Tupperware and a creator of Jello. “If he had failed that night, I think it would have cost Obama the presidency,” Mullen said later, citing the thought that haunted him as he and others watched the raid unfold.

Another family, including Kuwaiti's brother, who was the co-owner of the complex, lived on the first floor of the main house with further women and children. Bin Laden was thought to be living with his fifth wife and some of his children on the second and third floors behind translucent windows. All in all, at the time of the raid the compound was inhabited by eight or nine children aged from two to 12, three women and at least four men. Ahead of a Monday morning briefing about the operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the U.S. government released some graphics that shed new light on the compound where the most-wanted terrorist had been hiding for years. When Seal Team Six carried out a raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan on May 2, 2011, they not only killed the al Qaeda leader but swept up a treasure trove of his personal belongings.

Four combatants and one woman used as a human shield were killed in the raid, according to Pentagon statements. The second group poured into the main house before working their way, clearing room by room, up to Bin Laden's quarters. Kuwaiti's brother was killed as he prepared to fire a gun and as the troops moved to ascend the stairs to the second and third floors, they killed a fourth person, thought to be Bin Laden's adult son Hamza as he "lunged" towards them, according to the New York Times report.

JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles is located on the second and fifth floors of the popular Ovation Hollywood, a shopping and entertainment complex home to the Dolby Theatre, the world-famous venue for the annual Academy Awards. Despite its oversized fame, it's a modest-sized house, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a 300-degree-plus view of the city of Los Angeles. Designed by Pierre Koenig in 1959 from a concept developed by the house's owner Buck Stahl, it's also called Case Study House #22. An influencer who bought a home sight unseen with the hopes of flipping it has revealed a host of startling items she uncovered from an enormous safe on the property - including weapons, 'blackmail' photos and rare coins. The couple could barley walk through the hoarder's home and were immediately angered by the amount of items, dirt and even dead animals throughout the home since they paid the estate $20,000 to clean their fixer upper. A realtor says she hasn’t been able to sell a house down the street because of it.

Mactar bought a house based only on photos, much to his brothers Issa and Khadim's surprise, but Mactar has a vision even though he hasn't seen the house. Mactar got a steal of a deal on a house in Sainte-Sophie, Quebec, but it doesn't take long before he and his brothers, Khadim and Issa, learn why it was so cheap. As his budget takes a huge hit with each surprise repair, Mactar starts to wonder if he has made a huge mistake with this flip. Buying a house sight unseen is just another day in the office for Ryan and Kiki but even they are not prepared for what they find at the end of a wandering, overgrown driveway in Springbrook, Ontario.

Other neighbors noted that the house has been talked about going up for sale in the past, but nothing has come of it until now. "I told all the neighbors I am gonna throw a neighborhood barbecue or block party to celebrate," said Gharib. The listing agent, however, did answer the phone, and while they didn't go into details as to why the home was being sold, did note that the repeat media coverage has caused the homeowners considerable stress. They said that anytime legal action has been threatened or taken, the trash disappears — only to return at a later time.

Tiffany revealed the home was set to be finished in two months, but followers are still waiting on the edge of their seats for more information on the mystery items found in the safe. After finally opening the safe, Tiffany began to dig through the treasures. In fear someone would try to rob the place again, the couple got to work to open the precious safe.

Mactar’s big ideas has helped him flip more than 20 properties for profit, and he’s done that with the help of both Khadim, who helps curb his impulsive choices, while cool-headed Issa keeps an eye on the bottom line. Ryan and Kiki have spent all their available cash on this new flip -- it's the most they've ever spent on a residential property and it's a stress test from the start! As the local real estate market takes a nose-dive, they have to make their reno period shorter and shorter to be able to turn this property around before they see their profits go down the drain.

Later Tuesday, paramedics arrived to help the woman in her 90s who lives in the home. Despite the mountains of trash and some treasures, the couple continued to clean the home before finding that almost every inch of the home was soaked with rat urine. A few days later a suspicious young man claiming to be the nephew of the original owner approached Tiffany and Matt and asked if he could have everything in the large safe in the garage. Neighbors are cautiously optimistic that a real change comes around, after watching the swift action with which city and county officials who have cleaned the property. "We're all kinda relieved to not have this in our neighborhood anymore," said James Eric, who lives nearby. "It's really said to wish for someone to leave your neighborhood, but the people that were there have been so difficult and incorrigible all this time that we're having trouble feeling guilty about the possibility of them leaving us." Since CBS first reported about the home back in 2021, the owners have been sued by Los Angeles County for hoarding, the city has spent $12k on cleaning, the home has appeared on "Hoarders," and re-filled with trash on many separate occasions.

In the meantime, social media users have been speculating about the original owner's more sinister past. Their fixer upper wasn't just filled with piles of trash and dead animals, it was also the scene of two safes, one of which had already been opened and ransacked. Episode two features Quebec brothers Mactar, Issa, and Khadim who discover their cheap flip could ultimately cost big bucks!

The exterior graffiti is hideous, and the interior smoke damage from the kitchen-sink-barbecue is so gross they don’t know where to start. Located in the desirable neighbourhood of L’Île Perrot, Quebec, Mactar’s newest flip is a needle found in a real-estate haystack. The house is packed with stuff, has wallpaper everywhere and the stink in the carpet is almost unbearable. Add it to your Watchlist to receive updates and availability notifications.

After she signed documentation, city officials said the home could be getting cleaned up as early as Wednesday. Heather has surprised Nathan by purchasing a house without telling him, and this hoarder house is one of their grossest flips yet. The person on the other line informed the couple their dream fixer upper had been robbed just a few days before they were handed over the keys. After clearing all the clutter and starting the demo, Heather and Nathan find surprise after surprise; with all the rising costs, Heather must temper her creative impulses to keep the budget in check and make sure they make money on this flip. Other neighbors aren't quite as hopeful, saying the listing comes at a suspicious time, after the homeowner and her son were sued by LA County for public nuisance and hoarding. A case of extreme hoarding in Koreatown has multiple neighbors complaining to the city, as stacks of refuse and boxes teeter outside the dwelling.

Networks have seen internal discord over other past hires of contributors, as was the case when NBC News and MSNBC tapped Jen Psaki as she was preparing to depart the White House as President Joe Biden’s first press secretary. In 2022, CBS News also got pushback when it hired Mick Mulvaney, who has served as acting chief of staff for Trump, as a political analyst. Since her departure from the RNC, McDaniel had been pitched to the networks, a common practice after elected and political officials depart from high-profile posts. There had been definite interest at other networks, with a view that McDaniel wasn’t the kind of flame thrower like other Trump allies, figures like Corey Lewandowski, the former campaign manager who went on to serve as commentator on CNN.

Though she still hasn’t set a firm trial date, she thought it would be a good idea to start figuring out jury instructions.

The network saw her as someone who could provide insight into the Trump campaign, unlike other analysts. Still, it’s difficult for TikTok to more effectively organize these millions. Though the X platform, when it operated as Twitter, was highly efficient as a mechanism to share breaking news, TikTok’s algorithms make it less effective as a means of understanding what is happening minute by minute. Though TikTok users say it has become a source of news — among adults, those ages 18 to 29 are most likely to say they receive their news regularly on TikTok — that information tends to be highly targeted and asynchronous. While many users may know something is brewing in Washington, it’s likely they are less aware of the steps required to fight it, making it harder for TikTok to mobilize them.

That relationship has raised eyebrows among U.S. officials, who warn that the app could be leveraged to further the interests of an adversary. The bill’s critics argue that the U.S. is unfairly targeting a well-loved social network when the government could be dealing with household issues that directly benefit Americans. It could be a simple administrative or scheduling issue that’s far from intriguing. But if it’s connected to the substance of the investigation, then one possibility is that Manhattan prosecutors want to call a witness besides Cohen who either wasn’t available or prepared to testify Wednesday. We got some unexpected news in the Donald Trump grand jury investigation in New York. We were all set for a potential indictment Wednesday, but then suddenly heard that the grand jury not only wasn’t going to be voting but wouldn’t be meeting at all.

Even though the White House has now signed off on the legislation, the U.S. scheme to force ByteDance to sell TikTok could still fail — an outcome that may or may not result in a ban. China has previously stated that it would oppose a forced sale of TikTok, which is well within the Chinese government’s rights following an update to the country’s export rules in late 2020. TikTok itself would also surely mount a strong legal challenge against the forced sale, much as it did when the Trump administration previously tried to accomplish the same thing through executive action. TikTok also sued when Montana attempted to enact its own ban at the state level, which ultimately resulted in a federal judge issuing an injunction and blocking the effort as unconstitutional. TikTok is based in Los Angeles and Singapore but is owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance.

NBC News and other networks have grappled with how to cover Trump and his allies as the former president makes a new bid for the White House. Last year, CNN faced internal pushback for its decision to feature Trump in a town hall, which turned into a rally-like atmosphere with his supporters in the audience. MSNBC and CNN also have carried portions of Trump’s speeches, but with fact checking as he continues to traffic in unfounded claims. Wallace also praised NBC News’ chief political analyst Chuck Todd who, in an appearance on Meet the Press, publicly rebuked the network for the decision, saying that McDaniel had questionable credibility. Maddow, the top rated personality at the network, is the latest NBCU personality to publicly call out news division leadership over the decision, an unusual moment where internal drama has played out on the airwaves.

My political fantasy is, she comes to visit her pal Claire McCaskill at the Lake of the Ozarks and I run into them at the grocery store and invite them over for Long Islands. Watched yesterday and it is even more pronounced (the nasal whiney thing). House Speaker Kevin McCarthy notched a minor victory Friday as a procedural vote on the short-term spending bill succeeded. Republican Sen. John Cornyn said that senators from both parties are still discussing border provisions as the government could shut down on Saturday at midnight.
